Should You Home School Your Children

Let’s look at some the reasons for home schooling our children. We all know that the public education system has been “dumbed down” and some of us feel like our children will not get a good education at these public institutions. Classrooms are crowded with too many students per teacher leaving little time that the teacher can devote to an individual who might need help understanding something. This leaves not only the student feeling confused and not being able to grasp an idea, but if it is a teacher who really cares and wants to be a great teacher, it can leave them feeling frustrated also.

I know that this is where parents come in. If you are very active in your children’s lives and feel like it is important and work with them daily on spelling, math or whatever, and put in the time and help them understand what the lesson is, then your children might do just fine academically in a public school. However, there are many parents who seem to feel that it is the teachers total responsibility to make certain their child understands everything being taught, and they don’t want to (and actually will not) participate in their children’s education by taking the time at home to help them learn.

They just do not want to be bothered with it and have other things they would rather do. If you home school, you are in total control of your children’s education and have the time to make sure they understand what they are learning and if they need more time on one subject, it is no problem since they can learn at their own pace. We all grasp some things quicker than others and children who are home schooled will not be jeered at for needing more time to understand something, or be made fun of for being very smart and excelling at school.

Then we come to the morals part of this situation. If you are one of the parents who don’t want to spend much time guiding your children then they might learn some very bad things from other children in school, such as lying and cheating and no respect for others, just to name a few. If you are one of the parents who are very involved in your children’s public education or if you home school, then you will be instilling your values and beliefs into them and they will want to live up to your expectations, since almost all young people want their parents approval. In public school, they will meet others that might become lifelong friends who they might not meet otherwise.

I think that if you home school, it is extremely important to make certain your children are involved in activities so they can learn the give and take of living in our society instead of isolating them so that as adults they won’t be shocked by how some people behave and actually live with no thought of others and so will have the skills to deal with these people they that might find in their work environment or as neighbors.

To sum it all up, I think that if you have the time and your children’s welfare is of extreme importance to you, home schooling or being very active in your children’s public school education would be the way to go. Please don’t sit back and expect the government to educate your children and instill morals into them, it isn’t going to happen. I know a lot of people cannot financially afford to stay home and educate their children, but they can be very active in their education if they will just take the time.
